Law enforcement officials suspected labor unrest was behind a dynamite explosion that derailed an Illinois Central locomotive and 11 rail cars three miles south of Springfield on August 9, 1935. They believed a coal train that passes through the city each night moving coal from Southern Illinois mines to Chicago was the target.
